As the birthplace of Christ, Bethlehem holds a bond with Christians all over the world. The town is small in size and in population, but it and its surroundings have a great deal to offer the people who come to it.
At its heart stands the Church of the Nativity, one of the oldest churches still in daily use. Beneath it lies the Grotto of the Nativity, where a silver star marks the place where Jesus was born. Pilgrims stoop through the low Door of Humility to enter, as they have for centuries.
Since 1994 much of the town has been restored. The old city has been carefully renovated and can be explored on foot through stone lanes, markets and stairways. Hotels, restaurants and workshops have opened to welcome visitors, and cultural centres in and around Bethlehem hold concerts and events throughout the year.
A few minutes away, in Beit Sahour, are the Shepherds' Fields, where the angel first brought the news. Many of the families who make the work in our house have lived between these two places for generations.
