The Subject
Of all the Gospel scenes this is Bethlehem's own: the family leaving the town under threat, Joseph on foot and Mary riding with the infant held close. It is a carving about refuge and about faith on a long road.
The Making
The donkey, the walking Joseph and the seated Virgin are worked as one group, with Mary's veil carved thin enough to lift in the wind. The engraved plate reads “The Flight to Egypt”.
Chosen by the house from the workshops of the forty Bethlehem families it works with, and sent to you from Old Caritas Street.
