The Subject
This is the Hodegetria type, “she who shows the way”: Mary holds the Child on her arm and gestures towards him, directing all who look at her to Christ. The Jerusalem form of the icon is one of the best loved in the Holy Land.
The Making
The golden mantle is worked in fine lines of gold over ochre, a technique called assist, so the robe catches the light as you move. The panel edge is shaped and darkened.
Chosen by the house from the workshops of the forty Bethlehem families it works with, and sent to you from Old Caritas Street.
